Durga Devi's snacks stall on mada street does well

Durga Devi sells traditional home-made snacks like sambar vada, sundal, boli, kolukattai and gulab jamun at a roadside stall set up on East Mada Street.


She also sells a variety of appalams and ghee. 


She said set up the stall during the Panguni Utsavam of Sri Kapalin Temple, Mylapore. It still runs strong today. She also uses eco-friendly thonnais to pack the food.


The snacks are priced around Rs. 20. 


The stall is adjacent to Vadaamalar and is open from 4 pm to about 7:30 pm

Community on Dr Ranga Road makes, shares buttermilk to pedestrians, workers

As the sun beats down, passersby near Sabari Book House on Dr.Ranga Road, Mylapore, can stop at a stall on the roadside and have a cup of buttermilk.

This service is provided by local residents.


Kamala, the head of this service, says this gesture is for people who work in this heat. 


Kamala and her group of seven, make around 50-70 liters of buttermilk everyday and give it out.  They provide this service everyday from 11 am to 1 pm at this spot.

Lok Sabha polling: at Mylapore school

On April 19, polling day, only a few people who were in the queue that evening at booths at Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Mylapore. 


Many had cast their votes in the morning. 


It did not take these voters much time to cast the ballot.

On polling day, April 19, long queues formed outside the voting booth in Chennai Primary School at Sringeri Mutt Road, as early as 7:30 am. 


Many voters said they wanted to beat the heat and so came here early.


Polling was brisk here.

Polling at booth at St.Francis Xavier Matric School, Alwarpet.

On April 19, polling day, around 4:15 p.m., the final stages of polling was on at the booths at St. Francis Xavier Matriculation School, in TTK Road, Alwarpet.


With only a few people coming in to vote, the police officers and polling officers, slowly wrapped things up.  Voters then took less than two minutes o cast the ballot.


Polling closed at 6 p.m.


There were three polling stations here.

Lok Sabha polling day; at R A Puram

On April 19, polling day, around 4 pm, there were many first-time voters at Chettinad Sigapi Ramaswamy Primary School in R A Puram


Some of them said they were nervous. Others said their parents told them how to vote with EVMs.


A few elders were seen being helped to the booths by their families.

On April 19, polling day, at about 8 a.m. at Chennai High School in Ganeshapuram in Perambur, the voting booth was bustling with activity.


A large number of people stood in queues to cast their votes. 


The voting booth campus also had a counter with medical staff to provide assistance and treat individuals in need.

Sri Ramnavami at Saibaba Temple

Saibaba Temple in Venkatesa Agraharam Road celebrated Sri Ramnavami along with Sri Sai Jayanthi, on 17th April, with a series of alangaram of the gods and arathi and this was followed by annadhanam. 


The main procession took place at 7:15 pm and was taken through the Mada Streets of Mylapore. Crackers were burst outside the temple for about an hour at the time of the procession. 


Sri Ramanavami Celebration at Alwarpet's Sri Anjaneyar Temple

Alwarpet-based Sri Anjaneyar Temple celebrated Sri Ramnavami; the deity was adorned with a fruits alangaram and there was abhishekem for lord Rama. 


The fruit alangaram for lord Rama was made with a variety of seasonal fruits. 


The celebrations began on April 15 and ended on the 18th. 


This temple is located right next to M CT M school.


Summer camp of Chinmaya Vidyalaya in Anna Nagar

Chinmaya Vidyalaya is celebrating 20 years of its summer cool camp series.


The camp is from 1st - 8th May. It will be held at 506 3A, Chinmaya Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School, Anna Nagar Road, Anna Nagar from 9 am to 5 pm for tweens in the 8 and 13 years of age group.


The camp is Ramayana-themed. It includes exciting games, activities, artwork, and hands-on festival celebrations.

Sri Ramnavami at Nandala

Sri Nandalala Religious Trust at Dr Ranga Road held a Thirumanjanam event on the occasion of Sri Ramanavami at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. 


The host conducted archanai and aarti that evening. Rama bhajans were rendered by Ranjani Kaushik and team.

Shristi Farms, an organic food producer based in Edaiyur village, Veerakuppam, offers a diverse range of cold pressed/ chekku oils, milk products and pulses. They also offer hair oil and skin-care products.


These fresh products are cultivated and made on their farm in Chengalpattu and delivered from a house in R. K. Nagar, 2nd Cross Street. The sales are processed on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday evenings between 6:30pm-8:30pm.


Prices varies from ₹200-₹500 for all the oils based on quantity. Other prices are listed on their store’s website. The products can be ordered from the store online, where the items are restocked regularly.

Palm-leaf handicrafts on sale at Venkatesa Agraharam Road

Mukesh Kumar sells palm-leaf handicrafts at Venkatesa Agraharam Road, Mylapore. The pavement stall is next to Coffee Hut.


Mukesh says he makes small keychains, festival hangings, jewellery boxes and bags that can be customised. He also sells household items like muram and vegetable baskets.


Prices start from Rs.40 and vary, based on size. He accepts big orders. 

Place for desserts in Alwarpet

Finale - Patisserie and Baking School is located at No.10, C. V. Raman Road, Natesan Colony, Alwarpet, opposite Aarthi Scans and Labs.


This is a desserts bar offering sweet treats. It is named so because the dessert is considered the 'final course'.

The Malladi Brothers presented a vocal concert on the opening day, April 15, of the Sri Ramanavami Festival hosted and held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore. This festival is on from April 15 to 17. Open to all.

Carnatic music concerts celebrate Raga Sudha hall founder SVK

Naada Inbam is hosting its music concerts at Raga Sudha Hall in Luz.

In April, it celebrates the birth anniversary of S. V. Krishnan ( fondly called SVK), the founder of Naada Inbam and of Raga Sudha hall. 

The celebrations are in the form of Carnatic music concerts. These are held at 6:15 pm on most days, with varied timings on Saturdays and Sundays. 

Open to all rasikas.

New cafe in Alwarpet offers cool, hot drinks

'Corner Cafe' is a shop that recently opened on Bheemanna 1st Street, Alwarpet. 


While it specialises in cool drinks and juices, both hot and cold drinks are available in the shop. Fresh juices from seasonal fruits like mango, kiwi, watermelon, orange and muskmelon are available to buy.
