Highways to widen main road in Tambaram

Report By Sai Janani
The Velachery main road at Tambaram is a key road since it provides access to East Tambaram bus terminus, the railway station and Madras Christian College.Initially the road was narrow and both sides of the road were occupied by petty shops, hotels and hawkers.
An over bridge to connect east and west sides of Tambaram is under construction. Therefore the bus terminus which was initially situated near the railway gate has now been shifted right opposite MCC college gates. This has led to congestion.
In order address this issue the Highway authorities have demolished nearly 90% of the encroachments and are under the process of extending and widening the roads. Duraiselvaraj , the road inspector of the Highways Department says that they have obtained permission to extend the road for about 1 km from the MCC end within a year.
